The Allen House

The Allen House, 57 Rolfe Street

c. 1854

National Register of Historic Places (8/11/1982)

Located on the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s South Campus, the Allen House is one of Lowell’s earliest Italianate residences.  It is the only surviving element of what was once a street lined with large, stylish residences.  The original building has been added to or altered by each of its owners, but in each instance care was taken to adhere to the original’s proportions and stylistic features.

Originally built by Abiel Rolfe, an agent for the Lowell-Nashua Railroad, the house was purchased by Charles Allen in 1890.  Allen was a prominent businessman who served as director or trustee of numerous New York and New England businesses.  Allen also represented Lowell in Congress, was Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President McKinley, and was the first civilian governor of Puerto Rico.

As you explore Lowell's historic places, please note that many are privately owned.  Please respect the rights of property owners by not trespassing and remaining on public property as you view the community's many historic resources.
