Health Department
A message from Health Director Frank Singleton, MSPH, MPA
Welcome to the City of Lowell Health Department. Our Mission is to preserve and maintain the City’s public health standards to both promote and to protect the health and wellness of the people within Lowell: residents, workers and visitors.
We strive to fulfill our mission through a wide range of public health programs that serve to target the prevention of communicable and chronic disease, environmental health, as well as emergency preparedness and emergency medical response. The Department provides school nursing services to some 14,000+ school children, utilizes public health nurses to promote immunization and to respond to reportable diseases of public health concern and manages the City contract with the City’s Ambulance provider, Trinity EMS.
Prevention of youth access to tobacco and the handling of workplace complaints on smoking are also the responsibility of the Lowell Health Department.
City of Lowell Police Department (LPD) has an Unwanted Medication Disposal Box (kiosk) accessible to the public 24/7.
This kiosk is a secured, locked receptacle designed to be a collection point for the unwanted medications. There is a slot on the front that is capable of accepting sealed plastic bags containing pills ONLY. NO liquids or sharps may be deposited into this kiosk. Remove the pills from the prescription bottles and seal them in a plastic sandwich size “ZipLock” bag before arriving at the LPD. You can bring multiple baggies but each bag CAN NOT BE thicker than 1 1/4 inches (an average sandwich) or it will not fit into the slot. Please be sure the bag is completely sealed. To assure the seal will not break please use tape to reinforce the seal. The police will not be supplying materials for the disposal of unwanted medications and you can NOT package the meds in the lobby. The pills should be ready for immediate deposit into the kiosk upon arrival to the station lobby. For questions please call Maria Ruggiero at 978-674-1076 or Chris Connolly at 978-674-1066
