Regional Proximity

Lowell is located at the heart of the Merrimack Valley just 30 miles northwest of Boston, and provides businesses the opportunity to access markets for commerce throughout the Northeast. To the northeast are Portsmouth, NH (48 mi.) and Portland, ME (97 mi.); to the northwest are Manchester, NH (38 mi.), Burlington, VT (212 mi.), and Montreal Canada (252 mi.); and to the south and west are Worcester, MA (38 mi.), Hartford, CT (103 mi.), and New York City (170 mi.).

Highway Access

Business in Lowell are just minutes from major highways and interstates. Lowell is strategically located at the hub of the entire New England highway syste, at the junction of Interstates 495 and 93, and Route 3, Interstate 95, connecting northern and southern New England and providing access to the Boston perimeter commercial market, is accessible in minutes from either Interstate 495 or 93. Interstate 90, New England's east/west corridor, is also easily accessible off Interstates 495 and 95.

Air

Boston's Logan International Airport is 40 minutes away. Easily accessible with a competitive schedule of flights to major U.S. cities, the Manchester, NH airport is just 30 minutes from Lowell.

Rail

Commuter rail access to Boston is provided by the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority located near the Lowell Connector and downtown Lowell at the Gallagher Intermodel Center on Thorndike Street. Freight service is provided by Guilford Transportation, Inc.

Bus

Transit Local commuter bus service is provided by the Lowell Regional Transit Authority (LRTA). Headquartered at the Gallagher Intermodal Center, the LRTA operates 20 fixed bus routes, serving Lowell and eight surrounding communities from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Hourly off-peak and half hour peak service to Boston is also available via MBTA Commuter Rail at the Gallagher Intermodal Center, as well as intercity Vermont Transit bus service. The LRTA further provides demand response service to elderly and handicapped populations in Lowell and 12 surrounding towns.
